What is a Special Occasion?

  An occasion or special occasion is generally considered to be a special or important holiday, event, celebration or ceremony, which has or will take place at a particular time.

  A special occasion could also be considered as a, time or event that is important to an individual or group of individuals.

  The following examples are commonly accepted as main stream special occasions: Birthdays, Christmas, Easter, Halloween, New Years Eve, Thanksgiving, Valentines Day, just to name a few.

What is a Private Special Occasion?

  A private special occasion is generally a small event, where guests consist of friends, family and co-workers. Most often private special occasion events such as Weddings, Anniversaries, Birthdays, Staff Parties and any number of religious or recreational events such as Christmas or a super bowl party. In general it is illegal to sell liquor or charge a cover to such an event.

What is a Public Special Occasion?

  A Public special occasion is generally open to anyone who wishes to attend and most often liquor is sold at such special occasion events. These special occasions are generally organized by specially trained staff or committees and must conform to all bylaws, tax laws and liquor laws. Most often Public special occasion events such as a dance or group fund raiser and will often encompass pre-wedding fundraisers when serving liquor in a public place or selling liquor in ether a public or private location.

Keep Your Special Occasion Safe?

  Plan a safe and enjoyable special occasion by obtaining any and all permits, licenses and insurance. This may save you from any legal action resulting from an unforeseen mishap.

  Before planning any party or event it is always a good idea to investigate local laws and regulations to avoid problems. As a general rule if you plan on selling tickets, serving alcohol or using fire works, special permits and or licenses are required and it is a good idea to obtain them as needed. If you are unsure about what permits are necessary or how to obtain them, simply inquire at you local Town Hall or Municipal Office.

  Remember to give your self plenty of time to obtain any special occasion permits and you have to be willing to be flexible on your activities since local bylaws may restrict some planned activities such as fires, fireworks and the distribution of alcohol.
