January Birthstone - Garnet

Garnet is a family of minerals often used in abrasives such as sand paper and is also commonly used as gemstones. Due to the variations of the chemical compositions of the garnet mineral, garnets can be divided into two main groups with three main subtypes. These groups and subtypes are the basic structure of the garnet family, below you will see a basic representation of the garnet family.

The pictures may not characterize the exact type of garnet described.

The Main Garnet Family

The Garnet group (Al - which all subtypes have "Aluminum" as the first element in their chemical composition) and is known as "Pyralspite" which is simply an acronym for the main subtypes within this group. For example the main subtypes for Pyralspite are as follows, Pyrope, Almandine, and Spessartine which gives you the name of group Al: PyrAlSpite.

Pyrope Garnet

Pyrope Garnet Chemical Formula Composition: Mg3, Al2, Si3, O12
(Mg3 = 3 Magnesium atoms)
(Al2 = 2 Aluminum atoms)
(Si3 = 3 Silicon atoms)
(O12 = 12 Oxygen atoms)
Pyrope Garnet Color: Deep Red or Blood Red
Pyrope Garnet Single Refraction Velocity Range: 1.73 to 1.75
Pyrope Garnet Density: 3.65 to 3.85 (g/cm3 - Grams per cubic centimeter)
Mohs Hardness Scale for Pyrope Garnet: 7.0 to 7.5

You watch as the last candle is blown out. You wish this moment could last forever, as you present that special someone with a gift of pyrope garnet as deep and passionate as the moment itself. With a loving smile you adorn them knowing this moment will indeed last forever.

Almandine Garnet

Almandine Garnet Chemical Formula Composition: Fe2+3, Al2, Si3, O12
(Fe2+3 = 3 (Iron (II) also known as Ferrous) atoms)
(Al2 = 2 Aluminum atoms)
(Si12 = 3 Silicon atoms)
(O12 = 12 Oxygen atoms)
Almandine Garnet Color: Violet Red to Reddish brown
Almandine Garnet Single Refraction Velocity Range: 1.76 to 1.83
Almandine Garnet Density: 3.95 to 4.20 (g/cm3 - Grams per cubic centimeter)
Mohs Hardness Scale for Almandine Garnet: 6.0 to 7.5

Loved ones deserve a birthday to remember and memorable gifts make for memorable birthdays. With a gift of Almandine Garnet jewelry this will be a birthday your loved ones won´t soon be forgotten.

Spessartine Garnet

Spessartine Garnet Chemical Formula Composition: Mn3, Al2, Si3, O12
(Mn3 = 3 Manganese atoms)
(Al2 = 2 Aluminum atoms)
(Si3 = 3 Silicon atoms)
(O12 = 12 Oxygen atoms)
Spessartine Garnet Color: orange red
Spessartine Garnet Single Refraction Velocity Range: 1.79 to 1.81
Spessartine Garnet Density: 4.10 to 4.20 (g/cm3 - Grams per cubic centimeter)
Mohs Hardness Scale for Spessartine Garnet: 6.5 to 7.5

The sun sets as the candles are blown out and you can see the glow of eternal love in their eyes. Capture that glow with a gift of Spessartine Garnet jewelry. The moment in time may pass, but the eternal glow will last forever.

The Garnet group (Ca - which all subtypes have "Calcium" as the first element in their chemical composition) and is know as "Ugrandite" which again is an acronym for the main subtypes within this group. For example the main subtypes for Ugrandite are as follows, Uvarovite, Grossular, and Andradite which gives you the name of group Ca: UGrAndite.

Uvarovite Garnet

Uvarovite Garnet Chemical Formula Composition: Ca3, Cr2, Si3, O12
(Ca3 = 3 Calcium atoms)
