October Birthstone - Opal


Opal is a Mineraloid gel with the same chemical composition as quartz but a small percent of it's mass is water. The multicolor of the opal is a product of a network of silica spheres that make up the opals structure. Opal gemstones are best known as the October birthstone and Opal contains many color variations often in the same stone.

(Si02 = 2 Silicon Dioxide atoms)
(nH20 = 2 Noncrystalline Hydrous atom structure)
Opal Color: Whitish, Gray, Yellow, Green, Blue, Violet, Pink, Red, Orange, Black or fully or partially transparent.
Opal Single Refraction Velocity Range: 1.44 to 1.46
Opal Density: 2.0 to 2.2 (g/cm3 = Grams per cubic centimeter)
Mohs Hardness Scale for Opal: 5.5 to 6.5
