One warm sunny spring day my sister and brothers went to school for the day and it was true, I had nothing to do but to go upstairs to play since for me school was still about a year away. I crept quite quietly into my sister's room and if she only knew it would have certainly spelled doom. As I began to play from down stairs I could hear my mother say "Don't bounce on the bed, neat and clean it must stay". So with daring stealth in my sister's room I continued to quietly explore and silently play. From within my sister's room I was a great prince that explored faraway lands and raided a tomb, I even sailed the seven seas to explore the world most mysterious kingdoms, cities, towns and runes. Suddenly without warning as I was turned away came a sound that still haunts me to this day, a slow creek of old hinges as the closet door swung away. From with in the closet I could hear a faint whispery sound of a young voice humming away. With great hesitation I turned around to see for my self who or what was making that sound, but when I looked into the closet and looked all around their was nothing but shadows and typical things that could be found. I looked even closer and let my eyes follow the sound and again I saw nothing but shadows and things just hanging around, it was as if the shadows themselves had been making the sound. Without warning and as suddenly as it sounds, from a dimly lit crack in the back of the closet I heard that whispery sound. At once I remembered the words my mother did say, "In this grand old house we are lucky to stay, however when I met with the owner a few rules he did lay!" then I remembered the rules that from the landlord my mother did relay. "For a hundred years has been a room with no door and for a hundred years this must stay as before! When with in the vicinity of what would have been the old door, you must never bang on the walls or stomp on the floor and most important of all never open the old window from outside on the second floor". Why this was important no one ever did say, but I did remember seeing my two older brothers climbing an old ladder just the other day. With Bewildered worry form the open closet I began to back away as the whispery hum faded away. A shadowy black figure began to appear and if I was not so young I would have been trembling in fear. Like a cool winter wind the figure blew right through my body before I knew what to do. From behind I once again continued to hear the whispery hum had returned to my ear. Hesitantly not hastily, I turned around so I could see who or what was making that whispery sound. I gazed in disbelief at the site that I had found upon my sister's bed a little princess politely sat and aside from a tune she was humming she was not making a sound. She sat contently picking away bits of thick black thread that had her lips bound and as she dropped them the bits would vanish before touching the floor, this was a site I have never seen or even imagined before. This little princess wore neither pink nor white and in fact the hole seen filled me with fright. This little princess wore a gown of black with curly black hair all neatly tied back with little black ribbons and little black bows. She wore little black stockings and little black shoes that covered her toes, with little black buttons instead of pretty pink little bows. I gazed in disbelief at the site that I had found and if I was not only four, I would have been gone with a leap or a bound and soon she had finished removing the thread that had her lips tightly bound. The humming had stopped as she looked up and she said, "My father would be angry if he knew that I have removed this thread". I gathered my courage and then did I ask, "What is your name and why are you hear" and she replied "That is easy my dear, my name is Alice and you are the stranger her!" With only but a moment she continued to say, "What is your name and do you want to play?" With some hesitation I continued to say "I am not to talk to strangers, but I guess it's ok if we play" In a little time the shakes went from my knees and then we played pirates and eat imaginary carrots and peas, this little princess even taught me how to say thank you and please. Sometime went on as we continued to play, but the happy spell was broke when she stopped to say, "Thank you every much I enjoyed my play but theirs something you must know. In fact we are quite different and this surely must show, I must return to the shadows from which that I came." It became clear as a bell in the little princesses hart sorrow began to swell. She walked to the window with out making a sound as I backed to the door without turning around; the mood was not as playful as it was moments before. Alice told me a tail with details to sad to retell how she waited for her mother for how long I can't say, but she waited with her father and hoped she would return one day. As I reached the doorway I prepared to run just when Alice turned from the window and said in a sinister tone "Let's play and have some more fun". Alice sailed from the window and on to the bed, she dance around looked at me and said "I'll be the beautiful princess and you can be my knight, now come rescue me from the dragon under the bed". I asked Alice to stop and not dancing on the bed but Alice just giggled and started bouncing instead until from downstairs I could her my mother shout, That is your sister's room stop bouncing and get out! Alice paid no attention to what my mother said so again I asked her to stop but she just bounced harder on the bed. Soon I could hear my mother's angry footsteps stomping up the stairs and cross the floor, until the footsteps stop behind me just outside my sister's open door. From behind my mother grabbed me with a very tight hold; Alice grew angry and began to look rotten and cold. My mother screamed "My god that little girl is dead!" as my mother wisped me downstairs fueled by dread. This story is true, it happened just like I said and if you hear your children bouncing on their bed; you may just want to make sure it is not Alice instead. |
